Pomp and Celebrity Spotting

It was pretty thrilling to attend Chloe's graduation ceremony. The speaker was Lisa Kudrow (of Friends’ fame) and sitting behind her on the podium was Meryl Streep (a Vassar trustee who has a couple of kids attending the school, though neither was graduating this year). I know I should have been modeling an interest in academic accomplishment, but who can resist the thrill of proximity to celebrities!?!

Kudrow's commencement speech was entertaining and inspiring. She managed to work in all sorts of celebrity anecdotes – most about the ups and downs of breaking into show biz – to make the point that something that appears to be a setback can result in something even better down the road, especially if you keep your eyes/heart open. An interesting technical angle to the proceedings: they were streaming a video of the proceedings to a nearby auditorium because rain was threatening, and they provided instant transcription that sometimes was unintentionally hilarious. For example, “Vassar College” was often transcribed as “Bastards College.”
